Breeder info Feb 08 - Peter Waddington (copyright Peter Waddington/Tategoi-koi Feb 2008)
I first met Fujio Oomo (pronounced OMO and not ‘OO’MO) in 1993 when he was little more than an enthusiastic Koi amateur and owned a very high class Kimono store in Nagaoka City. However, growing up around all the famous breeders in Yamkoshi could not help but influence him. He speaks perfect English and even as far back as 1993 he told me that one day his ambition was to become a serious Koi breeder, specialising in Showa – which is his own favourite variety.
Showa fry are also easier to cull even after two days of hatching as the only ones retained are the black fry and the rest can be disposed of. This gives Fujio more time to deal with other areas of his busy schedule.
Since the mid-1990’s, there has been a massive influx of English-speaking visitors to Yamakoshi who found it difficult to converse with the Japanese breeders and Fujio assisted by being the translator between them. This led to long-time friendships between Fujio and the breeders, on many times I have seen Fujio successfully resolve some tricky situations which have arisen, mainly due to language barriers.
In return, many breeders have given real help and information back to Fujio on all aspects of breeding Nishikigoi. Breeders such as Nogami, Kaneko, Marusada, Yagenji and Shoji Tanaka all spring to mind here.
Fujio also was the first person I met who made ‘Direct Shipping’ from Yamakoshi to all other parts of the world instead of having to use outside agents and ‘middle men’ who did nothing more than arranging some paperwork. He also acts as a very good Koi Guide to foreign visitors.
He is based within walking distance from Nogami and owns two very modern indoor facilities and his Koi stocks improve with each passing year. He now owns parent stocks from Takeda, Dainichi and Nogami.
Fujio now, also buys other varieties from breeders around the area so, at times, he has a very wide range of varieties for sale. He is also very funny which keeps any guests travelling with him in good humour.
His mud ponds now are 2.5 acres of water for summer growing.
